Privacy policy
Effective October 11, 2026
Blockwalk.io is a canvassing tool for political campaigns: the iPhone and iPad app and the web dashboard that goes with it. It is operated by James Fette ("we"). This policy says what we collect, why, who can see it and how to have it deleted.
Who is in charge of what
Each campaign that uses Blockwalk.io decides what goes into it: its voter file, its sections, who is invited. We store and process that information for the campaign and use it only to run the service for that campaign. Questions about a campaign's own records, such as why a house is on a walk list, are best sent to that campaign. We'll pass along anything sent to us.
What we collect
Your account
- Your name, email address and, if you add one, a phone number
- Your password, stored only as a one-way hash
- Which campaigns you belong to, your role and your assigned sections
What you record for a campaign
- Visits: the address, when it happened, whether anyone answered, how it went, notes, topics that came up, who you spoke with and whether it needs a follow-up
- Yard sign and other requests: the address and the name given, and delivery dates
- Your name is attached to what you record, so the campaign knows who walked where
The campaign's voter file
Campaigns load voter registration records (names, addresses, party, age, voting history) that they obtain from election officials. These are used to build walk lists, maps and mailing lists for that campaign only.
Location
When you open a map in the app, it asks for your location so it can show where you are and which house is nearest. Your location stays on your device. It is not sent to us or stored.
Technical information
Our servers log each request with its IP address and time, for security, to limit repeated sign-in attempts and to fix problems.
What we don't do
- No advertising and no ad networks
- No analytics or tracking tools, in the app or on the website
- We never sell or rent information, or share it with another campaign
- We don't use information for anything but running Blockwalk.io
Who can see it
- Campaign managers see everything recorded in their campaign.
- Volunteers see the voters and visits in the sections they are assigned to, and nothing from other campaigns.
- We can access the data to run, fix and back up the service.
- Service providers handle specific tasks for us:
- Resend sends account emails (invitations and password resets).
- Mapbox converts street addresses into map positions. Only the address is sent.
- Apple Maps draws the maps in the iPhone app, and OpenStreetMap draws them on the web dashboard. Your device requests the map images for the area on screen.
- Expo delivers app updates. Your device checks with Expo for a newer version of the app.
- We will disclose information if the law requires it.
What stays on your phone
So the app works without signal, it saves your sections' walk lists and maps on your device, and any visits you recorded until they are sent. Sign-in details are kept in the device's secure storage. Saved walk lists are removed when a section is no longer assigned to you, when you sign out, and after 14 days without reaching our servers. You can also remove them yourself in the app's settings with Clear offline data.
How long we keep it
A campaign's records are kept for as long as the campaign uses Blockwalk.io. A campaign can ask us to delete all of its data. Nightly backups are kept for 14 days, so deleted information is gone from backups after that.
Deleting your account
In the app, open App Settings and choose Delete my account, or email support@blockwalk.io. We then:
- remove your name, email address, phone number and password from your account, and close it
- remove you from every campaign and section
The visits and requests you recorded stay with the campaign as part of its records, still showing the name you recorded them under. If you want those changed, contact the campaign.
Children
Blockwalk.io is not meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.
Security
Connections use HTTPS. Access is by invitation, and each account sees only its own campaigns.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new effective date. We'll tell campaign managers about significant changes by email.
